President Droupadi Murmu Emphasizes Technology’s Role in Empowering Marginalized Communities at BIT Mesra Platinum Jubilee
Ranchi, Feb 15 (IANS) – President Droupadi Murmu recently addressed the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, highlighting the vital role of technology in fostering development among marginalized sections of society.
During her speech, President Murmu called for equal access to the benefits of technological advancements for all communities. “Technology and humanity should complement each other,” she emphasized, referencing the principle outlined in India’s National Education Policy.
Reflecting on BIT-Mesra’s remarkable legacy, President Murmu expressed pride in her previous roles as the Governor of Jharkhand and Chancellor of the institute. “Whenever I come here, it feels like coming home,” she shared, underscoring her deep emotional connection to the state.
She praised BIT-Mesra for its history of academic excellence, noting that it has been a pioneer in supporting the mining and manufacturing sectors. The institute made a significant contribution in 1964 by becoming the first in India to establish a Department of Space Technology and Rocketry.
The President also acknowledged BIT-Mesra’s efforts to broaden its academic offerings. “I am delighted to see that BIT-Mesra now offers courses in Quantitative Economics, Data Science, Humanities, Animation, and Multimedia,” she said. These additions complement the institute’s core engineering programs, positioning it as a forward-thinking institution.
In her remarks, President Murmu praised the institute’s students, faculty, and alumni for excelling across various fields, from engineering and entrepreneurship to research, innovation, literature, sports, and journalism.
Discussing the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), President Murmu noted their transformative impact on global economies. She pointed out that the Government of India has introduced several initiatives to integrate these technologies into the nation’s development efforts.
She also emphasized the critical role of youth in shaping India’s future. “The enthusiasm and commitment of young people will be instrumental in creating a ‘Developed India,'” she said, recognizing the contributions of young women in fields like science, engineering, and technology.
Before concluding her address, President Murmu urged entrepreneurs to recognize and value the traditional knowledge of indigenous communities. This acknowledgment of indigenous wisdom could provide valuable insights and complement the country’s technological advancements.
Prior to her speech, the President visited an exhibition showcasing student projects from various BIT-Mesra departments. The event was attended by several notable figures, including Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, state minister Sudivya Kumar, BIT-Mesra Chairman R.K. Birla, Vice Chancellor Prof. Indranil Manna, and other dignitaries.
The platinum jubilee celebrations marked a significant moment in BIT-Mesra’s history, reaffirming its commitment to shaping the future of education, technology, and societal development.
