Exciting Weekend of Local Sports Action: Battle of the Boot and More

This weekend promises to be an exciting one for sports fans in North Louisiana, with major events taking place across the region. From basketball to soccer and wrestling, the local athletic scene is heating up, with the Battle of the Boot basketball showcase at Woodlawn High School set to take center stage. While several other teams will be competing in important matchups, including the Loyola and Calvary girls soccer teams and the LHSAA Wrestling Championships, the Battle of the Boot will be the highlight of the weekend.

The Battle of the Boot: A Basketball Showdown

The Battle of the Boot basketball showcase is the biggest event of the weekend, featuring 12 boys’ basketball teams from Northwest Louisiana competing in a day of exciting games. The event serves as a fundraiser for Woodlawn High School’s athletic department and promises to offer some thrilling matchups.

The headliner game of the day will be between Calvary Baptist, ranked No. 1 in Select Division III, and Red River, ranked No. 1 in Non-Select Division III. Both teams are considered heavy favorites to bring home a state title this year, making this game an intense preview of the playoffs.

For Red River, coach Dadrian Harris is excited about the challenge. Despite being the underdog, the Bulldogs are confident they can compete against the powerhouse Cavaliers. Key players like Jomello McDonald (10.6 points per game), Jayden Wells (10.2), and Warren Bowman (7.3) will be crucial in the matchup.

On the other side, Calvary Baptist brings a balanced attack with Tyrone Jamison Jr. (15.0 points per game), Bubba Strong (10.4), and Robert Wright (10.1) leading the way. Coach Vic Morris believes this game will be the perfect test before the playoffs. “This is exactly what we need,” he said, acknowledging the tough competition Red River presents.

Fans can expect a playoff-like atmosphere at Woodlawn High School, with the first game tipping off at 11 a.m. and the Calvary vs. Red River showdown scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $15, allowing access to all six games during the day. Food will be available, and attendees will receive an armband to come and go as they please.

Soccer Teams Eyeing Final Spots

Friday afternoon will see local soccer teams looking to punch their tickets to the LHSAA finals. Loyola, Bossier, and Calvary will compete for a chance to advance, with Loyola taking on Byrd in a girls’ semifinal game. The stakes are high as the teams prepare for their respective finals next week.

Meanwhile, Calvary’s girls soccer team is making history, reaching the semifinals for just the second time in school history. They’ll visit No. 1 Loyola, a team known for its consistent success in title games. The rivalry between these teams is sure to add an extra layer of intensity to the matchups.

Wrestling Championships at Brookshire Arena

For wrestling enthusiasts, Brookshire Arena in Bossier City will host the LHSAA Wrestling Championships this weekend. Thousands of wrestlers and fans will pack the arena, with local talent hoping to claim state titles.

The North DeSoto Griffins, defending Division II team champions, will aim to defend their title. This year also marks a significant moment as girls’ wrestling is held in conjunction with the boys’ competition for the first time.

The championships will run all weekend, drawing attention from fans across the state.

A Weekend Full of Sports Action

Whether you’re a basketball fan, a soccer enthusiast, or a wrestling supporter, this weekend has something for everyone. The Battle of the Boot basketball showcase is certainly the event to watch, but the soccer semifinals and the LHSAA Wrestling Championships are also not to be missed.
