NFL Star in Handcuffs!
Former NFL player Chris Kluwe got arrested Tuesday. It happened in Huntington Beach, California. City records show the charge was disturbing a meeting. This incident took place at a city council meeting.
Why Was He Arrested?
Kluwe, age 43, was upset about a library plaque. The city okayed a design using “MAGA” in an acrostic. MAGA stands for “Make America Great Again,” Trump’s slogan. He showed up to protest the plaque approval.
Fiery Speech and Protest
At the council meeting, Kluwe read a statement. Video shows he called MAGA a “Nazi movement”. He announced peaceful civil disobedience after this statement. Then, he walked up to the council members.
Police Step In Quickly
Police officers acted fast. They handcuffed the former Vikings punter. They then carried him out of the meeting room. It all happened very quickly.
What Kluwe Said About MAGA
Here’s what Kluwe declared in his full statement: “MAGA tries to erase trans people.” “MAGA means re-segregation and racism.” “MAGA means censoring books.” “MAGA means firing air traffic controllers when planes crash.” “MAGA means firing nuclear arsenal overseers.” “MAGA cuts veteran services and research.” “MAGA cuts education funds, even for disabled kids.”
“Nazi Movement” Claim
Kluwe continued, “MAGA is very corrupt and anti-democracy.” “Most importantly, MAGA is like a Nazi movement.” He added, “You swapped a swastika for a red hat, but it’s the same.”
Hours in Custody
Kluwe told the Orange County Register about his arrest. He was held for four hours before getting released. That’s a long time for a protest.
NFL Career
Kluwe played in the NFL for eight seasons, from 2005 to 2012. He first played for the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent in 2005. Later, the Vikings picked him up.
Retirement and Views
In 2013, he tried out for the Raiders, but didn’t make the team. Kluwe retired from football in 2014. He mentioned his outspoken views likely hurt his career. He supported same-sex marriage and criticized coaches in the past. He thought teams avoided signing him because of these views.
