Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has named Rajat Patidar as their new captain ahead of the 2025 IPL season. Former captain Virat Kohli expressed his full support for Patidar, acknowledging his remarkable journey and performance for the franchise.

“Rajat, firstly, congratulations and all the best. The way you’ve grown in the franchise and performed, you’ve earned a place in the hearts of all RCB fans. Myself and the other team members will be right behind you, and you’ll have our full support,” Kohli said in a video message.

Patidar takes over from Faf du Plessis, who led RCB for the past few seasons but wasn’t retained ahead of the 2025 auction.

His rise through the ranks has been meteoric. After his breakout performance in 2022, smashing a century in the playoffs, Patidar has become a vital player for RCB.

While this marks Patidar’s first IPL captaincy, he’s already led Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket, leading them to the finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Kohli acknowledged the responsibility Patidar now carries, saying, “To grow into this role is a big responsibility. To be seen as the guy who will take this franchise forward, I am sure this is a great honour for you. You’ve earned the right to be in this position, and I am sure you will grow from strength to strength.”

Kohli praised Patidar’s growth as a cricketer, highlighting his consistent performances and ability to handle pressure.

“I’ve seen Rajat evolve as a player. His game has improved many levels. The way he has led his state team shows everyone what it takes to lead this amazing franchise,” Kohli added.
