In a surprising move, two major Microsoft first-party titles are coming to PlayStation 5 in 2025. Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will be available on Sony’s console later this year. Developer World’s Edge confirmed the news in a Tuesday announcement, revealing both games will offer new expansions alongside their PS5 releases.

Age of Mythology: Retold Lands on PS5 in March

Fans of Age of Mythology will get a remastered version of the iconic 2002 real-time strategy game. Age of Mythology: Retold will hit PS5 on March 4, 2025. The game will come with new content, including the Immortal Pillars expansion, which will be available on all platforms.

Michael Mann, head of World’s Edge, expressed his excitement, saying the decision to bring the game to PlayStation was about expanding the Age community. “It’s not just about convenience—it’s about growing and strengthening the Age community,” Mann shared. PS5 players will be able to adventure as Arkantos, choose their pantheon, and battle for divine blessings, all while experiencing the same content as on PC and Xbox.

Those who pre-purchase the Premium Edition will get a special perk: five-day early access starting February 27, along with the Immortal Pillars expansion. Updates for the game will be synchronized across all platforms, meaning PS5, Xbox, and PC players will all receive new content simultaneously beginning March 4.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Arrives in Spring

The second title, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, will also come to PlayStation 5 this spring, though no exact release date has been set. In addition to the base game, the PS5 version will include a major expansion, introducing new content and civilizations to Ranked mode.

World’s Edge teased that the new DLC would be one of the most exciting yet for Age II: DE. With cross-play support across all platforms, this expansion promises to bring fresh experiences for players on PC, Xbox, and PS5 alike.

Additional Age of Empires IV DLC

World’s Edge also announced two upcoming DLCs for Age of Empires IV in 2025. The first expansion, Knights of Cross and Rose, will drop in spring. This will give fans even more content to enjoy across the popular real-time strategy franchise.

More Microsoft Games Coming to Rival Platforms

These moves are part of a larger trend in the gaming industry. Microsoft has recently adopted a more multi-platform launch strategy, bringing more Xbox games to Sony and Nintendo consoles. Last week, Forza Horizon 5, a hit racing title, was confirmed to be making its way to PS5 this spring.

Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, previously revealed that no Xbox exclusive was off the table when it comes to being launched on rival platforms. “What we find is we’re able to drive a better business that allows us to invest in a great game lineup,” Spencer explained. “Our strategy is to allow our games to be available wherever players want them.”

The upcoming release of Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on PS5 marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s strategy. By offering these games on Sony’s platform, Microsoft is continuing its push for a multi-platform future. Players on PlayStation 5 can look forward to these two popular titles, along with new expansions and features, further blurring the lines between Xbox and PlayStation ecosystems.
