MediaTek Unveils the Dimensity 6400: A Small Upgrade for Entry-Level 5G Devices
MediaTek has launched its latest entry-level 5G chipset, the Dimensity 6400, offering a modest update to last year’s Dimensity 6300. While the improvements are minimal, the new chip brings a slight performance boost, particularly in its prime core speed.
The Dimensity 6400 is built on the same 6nm process as its predecessor and keeps the same octa-core architecture. This includes two Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.5GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. The main difference from the Dimensity 6300 is a slight overclocking of the prime core, now running at 2.5GHz (up from 2.4GHz). However, this small tweak isn’t expected to result in noticeable performance changes for most users.
While the overall specifications are familiar, the Dimensity 6400 is designed for efficiency. It features multi-core processing, which helps the chip manage tasks more effectively, making it a solid option for mid-range smartphones.
For graphics, MediaTek has kept the same Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU as in previous models. This chipset supports displays with a resolution of up to 2520 x 1080 and a 120Hz refresh rate, making it suitable for smooth viewing experiences on budget-friendly devices. While not cutting-edge, this is a good option for users who want a reliable display for everyday use.
When it comes to photography, the Dimensity 6400’s Image Signal Processor (ISP) supports cameras with up to 108MP resolution. For dual-camera setups, it can handle 16MP + 16MP configurations. While there are no significant advancements in computational photography, the ISP does include color management to improve image quality.
The chipset supports 5G connectivity, including both SA and NSA 5G modes, and offers peak download speeds of up to 3.3Gbps. It also supports 5G carrier aggregation and VoNR for improved voice call quality on 5G networks.
In terms of memory, the Dimensity 6400 supports LPDDR4x RAM at speeds up to 2133MHz and UFS 2.2 storage, which should be sufficient for mid-range devices. However, it does fall short when compared to the latest high-end options available in the market.
The first smartphone to feature the new Dimensity 6400 chipset will be the realme P3x 5G. Set to launch in India on February 18th, this device will give users their first chance to experience the new entry-level 5G chip in action.
While the Dimensity 6400 brings incremental improvements, it still faces competition from MediaTek’s earlier Dimensity 6100+ chipset, which offers similar specs. That said, the Dimensity 6400 might appeal to those seeking an affordable 5G experience without needing the latest high-end features.
If you’re in the market for a budget-friendly 5G phone with decent performance and future-proofing for 5G connectivity, the Dimensity 6400 could be a solid choice. But for those looking for major upgrades in performance or photography, it may not be the most exciting release.
