Want to know which games ruled on the Epic Games Store this year? Epic Games just spilled the beans! Guess what? Genshin Impact, Rocket League, Honkai: Star Rail, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Fortnite topped the charts. According to Epic, these giants led in player spending and engagement. Surprisingly, none of these popular games were brand new in 2024.
Millions Playing Daily
On Friday, Epic Games released a blog post looking back at 2024. They shared some awesome stats! A whopping 32 million people play on Epic Games Store every day. This comes from a total of 295 million players on Windows PCs. Moreover, Epic divided the hottest games into cool categories like “Mythic,” “Legendary,” and “Epic.” These tiers include five “Mythic” titles, five “Legendary” ones, and ten “Epic” games.
Free Games Dominate the Charts
Now, here’s a fun fact! Most of the top five games are totally free to play. The exception is Grand Theft Auto 5. Even though you buy it, GTA 5 is a monster hit with over 210 million copies sold. Furthermore, an Epic Games person mentioned something interesting to Polygon. They stated that within each category (“Mythic,” etc.), the games aren’t ranked by popularity or spending. It’s just a random order!
Legendary and Epic Tiers Unveiled
Moving on to the “Legendary” category, we find EA Sports FC 24, Destiny 2, Alan Wake 2, Fall Guys, and Wuthering Waves. And for the “Epic” games? This longer list includes awesome titles such as EA Sports FC 25, Cyberpunk 2077, The Sims 4, Black Myth: Wukong, Satisfactory, Warframe, Farming Simulator 2022, Dead by Daylight, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Dead Island 2.
Gamers Still Love the Classics
Interestingly, new games only accounted for 23% of total playtime. Even within that, people mostly played yearly updates like Call of Duty or sports games. Looking back at 2023, only 8% of playtime was dedicated to truly original games, not connected to huge yearly franchises. Gaming expert Matthew Ball explained this further. In his 2025 gaming outlook, he noted that the same top franchises keep dominating playtime. For PC, games like Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Fortnite, League of Legends, and Minecraft consistently eat up 30% of playtime. Console gaming shows a similar trend with franchises like Call of Duty, FIFA/EA FC, Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto, and NBA 2K grabbing a massive 43% of playtime year after year.
Old Favorites Still Reign Supreme
In short, gamers are checking out new releases. However, they are still spending way more hours playing older, well-known games.
