Earthquake Hits Delhi!
Delhi-NCR residents got a surprising wake-up call early Monday! A 4.0 magnitude earthquake rattled the area. It caused tremors all over the region. Quickly, people went online to share their reactions. CCTV cameras even captured the shaking!
When and Where Did it Happen?
The National Center for Seismology gave more details. They reported the earthquake’s center was in New Delhi. To be precise, it was close to Durgabai Deshmukh College in Dhaula Kuan. The time of the event was 5:36 am. It occurred at a depth of about five kilometers, officials informed PTI.
People React – Running Outdoors!
As the ground trembled, residents in high-rise buildings felt it strongly. People hurried out from their homes in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad. In Noida’s Sector 20, a woman was on her morning walk. She mentioned not feeling the quake in the park. However, she noticed many people coming outside. It was strong enough to make people evacuate.
Police Say "Stay Safe!"
To reassure everyone, Delhi Police used social media. They posted a message on X, asking everyone to stay calm and safe. In case of emergency, they advised citizens to dial 112 for help.
Not the First Time!
Actually, Delhi-NCR often experiences minor earthquakes. These happen roughly every two to three years. The last similar tremor of 3.3 magnitude was recorded back in 2015, an official mentioned.
Quakes from Far Away Too
Just recently on January 23rd, Delhi felt strong tremors. These were due to a powerful earthquake in Xinjiang, China. That Chinese earthquake measured a significant 7.2 magnitude! Even before that, on January 11th, milder tremors were felt. Those originated from a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan.
Why Delhi Shakes
Delhi is located near the Himalayas, around 250 kilometers away. This Himalayan region is seismically very active. Therefore, Delhi often experiences seismic activity. These can come from both the Himalayas and closer locations. For example, in 2020, there were a few notable tremors. These included a 3.5 magnitude quake on April 12th, a 3.4 magnitude on May 10th, and a 4.4 magnitude near Rohtak on May 29th. Multiple smaller aftershocks also followed.
Risky Zone!
India’s seismic map places Delhi in Seismic Zone IV. This zoning indicates that the region has a risk. Earthquakes originating in the Himalayas pose a potential danger to this area. Experts consider it to be in a moderate to high-risk category for seismic events.
Leaders Share Prayers
Political figures also voiced their reactions online. AAP leader Atishi posted on X about the strong earthquake. She expressed her prayers for everyone’s safety. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal echoed similar sentiments. He too prayed for the safety of all. AICC spokesperson Ragini Nayak shared that the tremors woke her up. She also hoped for everyone’s well-being and safety.
