AMSTERDAM – Stellantis N.V. has officially launched STLA AutoDrive 1.0, its first in-house-developed automated driving system. This new technology introduces Hands-Free and Eyes-Off capabilities (SAE Level 3), representing a major advancement in the company’s strategy to enhance vehicle intelligence and automation. Alongside STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit, STLA AutoDrive aims to redefine the user experience and driving comfort.
The primary appeal of STLA AutoDrive is its ability to reduce driver workload, particularly in stop-and-go traffic. Capable of operating at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), the system enables drivers to temporarily engage in non-driving tasks. Whether it’s watching a movie, checking emails, or simply relaxing, STLA AutoDrive offers the opportunity to make the most of commuting time.
Ned Curic, Stellantis’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of this innovation: “Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority. By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”
STLA AutoDrive works by taking control of the vehicle under certain conditions, such as when traffic and environmental factors align. Once the system is activated via a physical button, it manages steering, speed, braking, and safe following distances, adapting smoothly to the traffic flow.
The system’s sensors continuously monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, ensuring high-precision awareness and reliability—even in low-light or inclement weather. To maintain peak performance, the system includes an automated sensor-cleaning feature, ensuring that critical components stay clear and functional.
Stellantis has focused on making STLA AutoDrive’s actions feel natural and predictable, mimicking the smooth responses of a human driver. Whether adjusting to merging traffic or maintaining a safe distance, the system ensures a confident, stress-free drive.
At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive offers Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes, which include features like Adaptive Cruise Control and lane centering. Looking ahead, Stellantis plans to expand the system’s capabilities. Future updates may enable hands-free operation at speeds up to 95 km/h (59 mph), as well as enhanced off-road automation for specific vehicle models.
STLA AutoDrive is built on a flexible architecture, allowing it to be deployed across Stellantis’ wide range of vehicles. Its cloud connectivity enables continuous improvements through over-the-air updates, ensuring that the system evolves with real-time data and feedback.
Although the system is already available, it complies with local regulations in supported markets. Drivers are required to remain seated, belted, and ready to take control when prompted. Additionally, STLA AutoDrive adheres to regional laws concerning driver conduct, including restrictions on phone usage while driving.
STLA AutoDrive is not just about technology; it’s about creating a more intelligent and intuitive driving experience. As it evolves, Stellantis plans to continue refining the system to ensure it meets the needs of drivers while enhancing safety and convenience. This breakthrough is just the beginning, with future advancements set to offer even more features and greater flexibility.
Stellantis is leading the charge in automated driving, and with STLA AutoDrive, the company is paving the way for a future where cars do more than just drive—they make the experience smarter and more enjoyable for everyone behind the wheel.
