Actor Imran Khan recently took a walk down memory lane at Mumbai’s iconic Bandra Fort, a place close to his heart. Known for its picturesque views and historic significance, the fort holds many personal memories for the actor, who filmed several scenes for his debut film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008) at this very location.
Imran, a Bandra local, revisited the revamped fort, now home to exotic trees and a modern amphitheater, and couldn’t help but reflect on its transformation. For him, the location represents much more than a scenic spot—it’s a piece of his childhood. “When I was 15-16, this area was desolate. It was just a juice center, a few sandwiches, and vada pav with no crowds,” Imran recalled. He fondly remembers hanging out with friends, despite the occasional shady characters lurking around, giving the place an adventurous charm.
For Imran, the fort was a fitting backdrop for the 2008 film. “It felt so organic for our characters in Jaane Tu… to hang around here,” he said, emphasizing how personal the location felt for both him and his co-star, Genelia Deshmukh, both being Bandra residents. He also shared a fun memory of Bandra Fort being converted into a mela for a song sequence in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara! (2013), directed by Milan Luthria.
While Imran acknowledges the improvement in the area—now cleaned up with promenades and better street lighting—he admits there’s something missing. “Now, it looks like a park-complex, but that feeling of mystery and romance has disappeared,” he said. Reflecting on his teenage years, Imran fondly remembers Carter Road, once a deserted backroad where he could sit undisturbed at any time of day. Today, however, Bandra is the bustling heart of Mumbai, a place he loves but also feels nostalgic for the quieter days of his youth.
One of Imran’s most poignant reflections came when discussing his daughter, Imara. As a parent, he expressed regret that he can’t give his daughter the freedom he had growing up. “When you become an actor, you no longer have the ability to wander into public spaces like anyone else,” Imran explained. He shared how, as a young child, Imara began to wonder why people were following their car. “I had to explain to her that I act in movies, so people recognize me. It’s bizarre, but that’s the reality.”
Imran revealed that taking his daughter to public parks or other public spaces requires planning, as his fame often leads to crowds. “Sometimes people don’t have a sense of consideration around a little child,” he added, explaining how the excitement of seeing a celebrity often overrides respect for personal space.
Despite the challenges fame brings, Imran expressed deep gratitude for the experiences his career has afforded him. His connection to Bandra Fort is a reminder of the simpler days of his youth, before his life in the spotlight.
As the actor navigates the demands of fame and fatherhood, he continues to hold onto the cherished memories of his childhood, even as Bandra changes around him. What do you think of Imran’s reflections? Have you experienced similar shifts in your own hometown? Let us know in the comments below!
